On Tuesday, April 5 the Los Angeles City Council proclaimed April 11 as Ethical Consumer Day. In the chambers of City Hall, City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield honored Labor 411 and emphasized the importance of ethical consumerism.
“Just like you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can’t judge a business by its logo. You don’t necessarily know whether that business that you’re going to is socially responsible and treats its workers fairly and allows them to unionize. There’s a solution to that,” Blumenfield said. “Organizations such as Labor 411 publish lists and ease the connection between consumers and union-made products and services.”
It is essential that we make the choice to patronize ethical employers that treat their workers fairly and pay a living wage to create a stronger economy and a stronger middle class. On Ethical Consumer Day, Labor 411 asks you to shop ethically and to shop your values.
The Ethical Consumer Day proclamation reads as follows:
WHEREAS, for over a century labor unions have continuously fought for basic human rights and to protect hardworking Americans from negligent and dangerous working environments; and
WHEREAS, labor unions are responsible for helping to empower and enlarge the middle class, ensuring members have good jobs, a living wage and workplace protections; and
WHEREAS, a strong middle class is the backbone of the United States; and
WHEREAS, unions not only protect the worker, but offer their families the chance to live happy and healthy lives; and
WHEREAS, when families benefit, communities benefit, helping to secure a robust economy for the entire country; and
WHEREAS, economic inequality hurts everyone and in a world of growing globalization, it is more important than ever to protect the rights of workers to organize; and
WHEREAS, unions not only support members while they are in the workforce, but also help assure seniors a safe and comfortable retirement; and
WHEREAS, socially responsible businesses support union workers at all stages of their careers; and
WHEREAS, socially responsible jobs are in high public demand and it is important to recognize organizations and businesses that support a union workforce; and
WHEREAS, organizations such as Labor 411 publish lists of union businesses and ease the connection between consumers and union made products and services; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this Resolution, the Council of the City of Los Angeles hereby declares April 11, 2017 as Ethical Consumer Day in the City of Los Angeles.
