Celebrate the Holiday Season the Union Way in our Nation’s Capital

The snow is falling, and the holiday season is upon us. As natives and visitors alike know, Washington, DC and its surrounding communities offer some of the most scenic and exciting holiday attractions in the nation, from spectacular shows at local entertainment venues to outdoor displays. The 2018 holiday season offers a number of different options for all ages and price ranges through the end of December and into January.

“The Nutcracker” at the Kennedy Center

What: Bring the family and friends to the popular ballet, “The Nutcracker.” Enjoy a dazzling production of the timeless tale of holiday enchantment. Ballet West presents the DC premiere of its whimsical new production.

National Christmas Tree in President’s Park 

When: Lighting at 4:30 p.m. daily
Where: 101 Independence Ave SE, Washington DC, DC 20540. First Street SE entrance
What: The National Christmas Tree is part of a three-week celebration of music and festivities in the nation’s capital. The beautiful spectacle is located in President’s Park near the White House. The walkway surrounding the National Christmas Tree features trees decorated with handmade ornaments from 56 U.S. States and territories.

National Philharmonic: Handel’s “Messiah” at the Strathmore Center 

When: Dec. 22-23
Where: 5301 Tuckerman Ln, North Bethesda, MD
What: The perennial holiday favorite features “And the Glory of the Lord” and the “Hallelujah Chorus.” Enjoy the performance by the acclaimed National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorale with world-class soloists led by conductor Stan Engebretson.

Holiday concert series at United States Botanical Gardens

Where: 100 Maryland Ave SW, Washington, DC
What: The gardens offer a beautiful display of indoor decorated trees as well as an array of poinsettias and their plant cousins. Throughout the month of December, enjoy a holiday concert series on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Zoolights at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo

When: Now–Jan. 1, 2019
