Five Little-Known Labor Day Facts

We at Labor 411 love trivia. And we love the labor movement, of course. So we thought we’d combine the two and share you with some Labor Day trivia as we approach the big celebration on Monday!

1.New York City was the first city to celebrate Labor Day. It did so in 1882, with a parade of over 10,000 participants. 

2.Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday on February 21, 1887.

3.It was a foe of organized labor, not a friendly ally, who signed the Labor Day holiday bill. President Grover Cleveland did so under great pressure from voters and Congress.  

4.Canada celebrates its Labor Day on the same day as the United States. 

5.The first Labor Day was organized by Peter McGuire, a cabinetmaker from New York.
