Stand up for Workers, Against Janus this Weekend

By Evan Henerson

This weekend, working people across the nation will gather to demand “an end to the rigged economy” and to defend our freedom.

What exactly does this mean? Well, we won’t touch the economy bit, but the defense of freedom is pretty self-evident, especially in light of a certain case about to come before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Janus vs. AFSCME Council 31. Perhaps you’ve heard of it?

The case basically will determine whether public employees need to pay their union dues even if they happen to disagree with their union’s position. Janus a child support specialist for the Illinois Department of Healthcare, has somehow turned this into a case about freedom of speech. Unions nationwide counter that without mandatory fair share fees, “free riders” will enjoy the benefit of union representation and that gradually unions will be weakened by an influx of nonpaying members.

The case comes before the Supreme Court on Monday, Feb. 26. Workers will take to the street Saturday as part of a Working People’s Day of Action and then again in some cities on Monday. Here’s from the website where you can find a rally in your area.

Fight for the freedom to come together in strong unions.
Fight for equitable pay.
Fight for affordable health care.
Fight for quality schools.
Fight for vibrant communities.
Fight for a secure future for all of us.

Labor 411 stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters across the nation. Our friends in San Francisco, Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York each have noon rallies on Saturday.

The Los Angeles rally is from 11 a.m.-noon on Monday, Feb. 26 at LA County/ USC Medical Center, 2051 Marengo St, Los Angeles, CA 90033
