Trump Suggests Delaying The 2020 Presidential Election

Many have openly wondered if President Donald Trump would pull some stunt to keep himself in power longer than he otherwise should be.

Today, he public suggested that the presidential election be delayed.

In a morning tweet, Trump wrote with his signature disregard for the rules of capitalization, “With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???

Unfortunately for Trump, if he delays the election such that a president has not been elected by January 20th, his arch nemesis, Nancy Pelosi, could become the acting president. The site, Constitution Center, notes:

“Absent a clear winner of the presidential election on January 20, the Speaker of the House would serve as Acting President under the current succession law. The 20th Amendment requires that the duly elected president and vice president assume their positions at some point. ‘Congress may by law provide for the case wherein neither a President elect nor a Vice President shall have qualified, declaring who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected, and such person shall act accordingly until a President or Vice President shall have qualified.'”

Many took to Twitter in response to the President’s tweet, like presidential historian, Michael Beschloss, who wrote: “Never in American history—not even during the Civil War and World War II–has there been a successful move to ‘Delay the Election’ for President.”
