This May workers at the University of Southern California’s University Park Campus Child Care Center voted to unionize for the first time, becoming members of SEIU Local 99. The Child Care Center is operated by Children’s Creative Learning Center the daughter company of KinderCare one of the nation’s leading providers of early childhood education services. The unionization campaign was a massive success for workers who were experiencing ongoing wage disputes, unsafe staffing ratios, questionable childcare practices, inadequate supplies and unsanitary facilities.
Unfortunately, their victory was short-lived. Just a month later, Children’s Creative Learning Center announced they had ended their contract with the university and would no longer be providing childcare services at any of the on-campus locations.
