October 2013

College Faculty and Staff Guild members are joined by National AFT President Randi Weingarten and CFT President Josh Pechthalt at the downtown immigration rally earlier this month.

The Struggle Continues

We’ve had a busy first couple of months as we started this academic year – preparing for negotiations, gearing up for accreditation cycles on our campuses, working for our endorsed candidates, and taking part in actions on issues such as immigration reform and economic justice. Be sure to fill out our online negotiations survey to help us prioritize the issues we will take to the bargaining table. We hope you’ll read in this issue how the California Federation of Teachers, our statewide union, is fighting the rogue accreditation agency that wants to shut down City College of San Francisco and is overstepping its authority with dozens of other California colleges. Read about how hundreds of faculty rallied for immigration reform in Los Angeles on behalf of their students and because it’s the right thing to do.

Several events are coming up this semester – unemployment and collective bargaining workshops as well as guest lecturers. We hope you participate and become active in your union. We are stronger together!

Guild News

Gearing Up for Negotiations

The Guild is gearing up this semester to start the process of negotiations for a new bargaining agreement. “The contract is the heart and soul of our union,” explained Guild President Joanne Waddell. “By establishing our hours, wages and working conditions, the agreement sets the stage for our students to be successful.”

Union Files Lawsuit Against Rogue Accreditation Agency

CFT and the San Francisco Community College Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 2121, filed a lawsuit against the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) at the end of September, seeking an injunction to keep City College of San Francisco (CCSF) open and accredited.

Hundreds of Educators Show Support for Immigration Reform

Acting on the theme of the AFT’s Civil, Human, and Women’s Rights Conference -- “Principles that Unite Us” -- Local 1521 members joined with hundreds of students, parents, community activists, and teachers from across the United States on October 4 to call for Congress to “Vote now!”

Over Labor’s Objection, Gov. Signs 2-Tier Community College Fee Program (AB 955)

Despite lobbying efforts and phone calls made by concerned educators to Jerry Brown’s office urging him to veto AB 955, a bill that allows higher fees to be charged for community college classes during intersessions, he nevertheless signed the bill.

Thanks for All Your Work on Andra’s Campaign!

Thanks to the students and members of the Los Angeles College Faculty Guild and the Glendale Community College Guild who worked on the campaign of government instructor Andra Hoffman for State Assembly.

 President's Message
It’s Time for Education to Go on Offense

By President Joanne Waddell

Can you win a game by only playing defense? It’s unlikely. But that’s what we’ve been doing – responding to attacks like Prop 32, reacting to actions limiting our funding, or trying to chip away at our hard-fought-for rights, such as through attacks on pensions. It’s time now to go on offense.
