This administration has had plenty of lows.

We’ve seen ICE dragging working people from daycares, schools, factories, and homes.

We’ve seen federal troops and national guards sent into peaceful cities.

We’ve tried to comprehend the incomprehensible threats towards Greenland and Canada.

We’ve seen people sent to prisons in countries that they’ve never been to and without due process.

We watched as Trump tired to end the birthright citizenship because he apparently doesn’t like immigrants.

We’ve watched the destruction of the White House so that Trump can build a gaudy $300 million ballroom.

We witnessed Trump pardon January 6 traitors.

We saw him attack diversity in schools and the government, rolling back decades of gains for minorities who have suffered systemic discrimination since our country was founded.

But this week has really crystallized just how sociopathic this administration is. Over 40 million Americans, many of which have low-wage jobs, face literal starvation in November because of the lapse of SNAP benefits. Over 16 million of the recipients are children. And the benefits are meager to begin with. They provide an average of $6 per person per day for food and a maximum of $9 per person per day.

Trump has not only refused to fulfill his role to release emergency funding to keep SNAP benefits flowing in November, he is fighting a court order to fund the benefits right now. He has the authority, obligation, and funds to keep tens of millions of desperate Americans from going hungry. Instead, he is fighting the order and appealing it. Every day that he doesn’t abide by the order and fund SNAP benefits is a day that innocent people suffer needlessly.

This is demented behavior without rational policy. Over 40 million Americans are suffering at this moment because of a man who was born with a silver spoon and either doesn’t know what it’s like to suffer or takes pleasure it watching others do so.
