COVID-19 Can’t Quell Cannabis Campaigns

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, cannabis stores and dispensaries in Massachusetts and Illinois are ramping up their efforts to unionize, according to an article in Marijuana Business Daily (MBD).

Writer Jeff Smith identifies five businesses that the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) has petitioned the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to represent.

Smith’s article notes that the COVID-19 outbreak has magnified worker dissatisfaction and concern over safety.

“Union officials say frustrations have built up for a while and reached a tipping point during the coronavirus outbreak among marijuana retail employees,” Smith writes.

“It wasn’t until this crisis hit us that these workers realized that nothing has changed and it will never change, so we have to do something about it,” Moises Zavala, organizing director for UFCW Local 881 in Illinois told MBD.
