Ethical Consumer Day Spotlight, Washington DC – The Beacon Hotel

By Evan Henerson

Our nation’s capital is a great union city. The entertainment options are endless, starting with the collection of Smithsonian museums and including the National Mall, Union Station and the always competitive professional sports teams like the Nationals and the Wizards who just made the NBA playoffs. We will be providing a new list of activities when we release the 2018 edition of the Labor 411 Washington DC Directory which is coming to you soon.

Of course, if you’re going to be spending any time in Washington DC whether it be for business, pleasure or politics, you will need a place to lay your head at the end of the day. With the help of our friends at UNITE HERE’s Fair Hotel campaign, we can recommend more than 30 great places to choose from. Our upcoming 411 DC guide and online listings can help you out with the choice.

One of our favorites homes away from home is the Beacon Hotel & Corporate Quarters. Located on Rhode Island Avenue, NW, the 199-room Beacon is a short walk from the White House, Dupont Circle, the Kennedy Center. Basically, it’s near everything. The Beacon Bar & Grill and the rooftop Sky Bar lounge boast some excellent meals and wonderful views.

According to data gathered by Destination DC, 22 million visitors passed through Washington DC in 2016 – a new record for the city. During that same year, the leisure and hospitality industry supported 77,000 jobs in the DC area.

Visitors have choices. For hospitality, we recommend doing your homework, finding a place that treats its workers fairly and choosing accordingly.
