Hotel Workers Participate in Car Caravan to Call Attention to Need for Healthcare Coverage Pandemic

Nearly 100 hospitality workers participated in a car caravan calling attention to the need for health insurance coverage through the pandemic. The worker caravan paraded on Century Boulevard near LAX, which has the largest concentration of hotel rooms in Los Angeles County.

“No hotel worker should be left without healthcare in the middle of a pandemic—hotel employers could agree to extend healthcare tomorrow if they wanted to.” said Kurt Petersen, Co-President of UNITE HERE Local 11. “Unemployment is over 90% in the hotel industry. Workers should not have to choose between paying rent and paying for healthcare for their children.”

The Westin LAX, Hyatt Regency LAX, Four Points, Hilton LAX, Marriott LAX, Holiday Inn LAX, and Sheraton Gateway LAX are among hotels yet to guarantee health coverage for their employees through the pandemic.

“I need my healthcare coverage extended through the pandemic. My entire family depends on my healthcare and I couldn’t imagine staying without healthcare in the middle of a pandemic. What would I do if one of my kids got the virus? It terrifies me,” said Raul Macias, a 21-year bartender who was laid off in March after the crisis began and whose healthcare coverage is expiring in June
