In Times of Tragedy, Labor Steps up

Labor takes care of its own, even in times of tragedy. Especially in times of tragedy.

6-year-old Stephen Luciano Romero was one of the victims of the shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival at the end of July. Stephen’s father, Alberto, is a member of IBEW Local 332. Alberto’s childhood friend and former UFCW Local 5 member Eli Sanchez organized a GoFundMe fundraiser to help the family pay for funeral expenses and other recovery measures.

Stephen’s mother Barbara Aquirre and her mother Barbara Velasquez Aquirre were both wounded in the incident as well. Aquirre is a member of SEIU Local 521 and her mother is a retired SEIU member. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help aid their recoveries as well.

The Stephen Romero fundraiser raised more than $135,000 in its first seven days, blowing past its $25,000 goal. The “support for Barbara” fund raiser has more than doubled its $10,000 goal, having raised $21,656 as of this writing.

“Barbara, our daughter and I are very thankful!” Alberto Romero wrote on the site. “We couldn’t have imagined how many people wanted to help us.”
