Over 15 million workers rely on SNAP. That sentence should be chilling enough on its own. But more distressing is that the average recipient only receives $6 per day from SNAP. The maximum is a little over $9 a day, or $282 month. The more people in a household, the lower the benefit amount per person.

Has anyone seen food prices lately? What does $6 or even $9 get you? And that’s for an entire day.

Yet conservatives and their media will have you believe that those who rely on SNAP are eating lobster and steak for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The reality is more like instant ramen and other ultra-processed cheap, unhealthy foods since that’s all one can afford on such a miserly amount. That’s assuming you can get two or three meals out of that benefit.

At the same time, the wealth in the US is at obscene levels. We have now have 12 companies with market caps of over $1 trillion each. All but three of them are U.S. companies. The concentration of wealth at the top is unprecedented in our country’s history. The money is there to feed Americans but politicians would rather do everything else but tax the rich and corporations.

The next time you see propaganda demonizing those on SNAP, remember just how little the recipient receives.
