Three of the Worst Reactions by Republican Politicians During the Teacher Protests

By Sahid Fawaz

1. Governor Mary Fallin of Oklahoma

Her response to a protest by teachers with some of the lowest pay in the country:

“Teachers want more [pay] . . . But it’s kind of like having a teenage kid that wants a better car.”

She actually said that.

2. Governor Matt Bevin of Kentucky

Called teachers “ignorant” and “selfish.”

Made the outlandish claim that kids suffered sexual abuse because they couldn’t go to school due to the teacher walkouts. He later apologized for his statement.

3. Republican Legislators in Arizona

Two members of the GOP introduced a bill to jail teachers for exercising their right to strike.

The bill also includes a $500 daily fine.
