University Of California Agrees To Recognize Union Of 17,000 Student Researchers

A huge win for for student researchers in the University of California (“UC”) system happened last week when it decided to recognize the Student Researchers Union (“SRU”), which is part of the United Automobile Workers (“UAW”).

The decision affects more than 17,000 UC student researchers and will likely send shockwaves (good shockwaves) to campuses across the country.

The union tweeted:

“BREAKING: UC agrees to recognize SRU-UAW in its entirety! This historic victory was brought about by the tireless efforts of thousands of SRs who organized to win a union & a direct response to our massive Strike Authorization Vote. Now let’s win a strong contract for all SRs!”

The labor activity surge that began in Striketober continues through this month with Starbucks workers unionizing, Kellogg workers rejecting lowball management offer, and, now, with UC workers going union.
