Just last month, workers with South Coast Safe Access, the first licensed marijuana dispensary in Orange County, California, organized via UFCW 324. The labor contract guarantees minimum starting pay of $13.50 with benefits, vacation, and pension contributions. Union organizing is a strong sign of normalizing cannabis as a professional – and legitimate – industry. National Weed Day is tomorrow (4/20) and we think these organization efforts are something to celebrate.
Legal cannabis use doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Alaska, and Washington, D.C. have all permitted the legal consumption of cannabis without medical need, and in Colorado revenue from cannabis sales may top $1 billion this year.
Labor 411 salutes the efforts of those trying to organize this budding industry (pun intended, of course).
