WATCH: Largest U.S. Oil Strike Since the 1980s Happening Now

By Sahid Fawaz

Members of the United Steelworkers of America (“USW”) have walked off the job at 11 plants throughout the country after their employers refused to engage in good faith bargaining.

The USW states:

“The oil industry is the richest in the world, but their greed and their bad faith bargaining has stalled efforts to improve conditions in their workplaces. The industry has refused to address serious health and safety issues including:

  • the daily occurrence of fires, leaks, emissions, and explosions,
  • understaffing at refineries that forces workers to put in excessive overtime,
  • brutal and dangerous scheduling practices, and
  • unsafe reliance on outside contractors.”
