Today, Labor Day is an opportunity to spend time with loved ones at a barbecue or picnic, take a trip or to just relax. In all the fun we often forget the struggle that working Americans endured and the victories that were won to achieve today’s workplace rights.

Over the years Labor Day has become synonymous with end of the summer BBQ’s, giant retail sales, three-day weekends, and a moratorium on white clothing. However, back when Labor Day was first established, its sole focus was to celebrate the labor movement and acknowledge the monumental achievements of workers. We must not forget the humble beginnings of this holiday and the real reason why we celebrate it each year.

As summer comes to a close with Labor Day’s long weekend of family and friends, remember that you can make a difference with every dollar you spend. Show your appreciation this Labor Day and support fair wages, secure working conditions, and good American jobs by purchasing high-quality, union-made goods whenever you can.
